Identity Photo Standards for Belgian eID and Passport
The Belgian Federal Public Service Interior imposes strict biometric criteria for travel and national identity documents. Any deviation results in immediate administrative rejection.

Regulatory Specifics
Light Grey Background Requirement
Unlike many countries, Belgium formally prohibits a pure white background. The background must be uniform and light grey (approximate reference RAL 7035). A white background causes overlapping of facial contours during government scanning.
Technical Format
- Width : 35 mm
- Height : 45 mm
- Face : 31 to 36 mm (chin to crown)
- Resolution : min. 600 DPI
Concerned Documents
eID (Identity Card)
Standard validity period: 10 years

RESIDENCE PERMIT (FOREIGNERS)
Expression & Pose
Neutral, mouth closed. No smiling or frowning is tolerated.
Facing the lens, head straight. Direct and horizontal gaze towards the camera.
Eyes open and visible. Glasses recommended removed to avoid reflections.
"The applicant must present a neutral expression, mouth closed. No smile is allowed. The head must be straight, facing the lens, without lateral or vertical inclination."
Visual Compliance Guide

Uniform light grey background, neutral expression, even lighting without cast shadows.
